This is the most useful local fact on this page. The Medina County Building Department serves unincorporated Medina County, while Wadsworth, Medina City and Brunswick each run their own building departments.
Critically, the county department states that "HVAC and Electric contractors will still need to provide a state license when applying for a permit." Ohio does not require a state licence for residential electrical work - the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board licenses commercial contractors only. Medina County voluntarily closes that gap.

Medina County Questions
Why does Medina County ask for a state licence when Ohio does not require one?
Because the county chose to. Ohio has no state residential electrician licence - the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board licenses electrical contractors for commercial work only, and the Legislative Service Commission is explicit that a licence is not required for residential projects. Medina County's building department closes that gap itself by requiring electrical and HVAC contractors to produce a state licence when applying for a permit. It is a genuinely good consumer protection, and it means an unlicensed contractor simply cannot pull your permit here.
My Brunswick house was built in 1997. Can it take an EV charger?
Often yes, but check first. Homes from that era in Medina were commonly built with 150-amp services, and a Level 2 charger is typically a 40 to 60 amp continuous load. Whether it fits depends on what else has been added since - a finished basement, a hot tub, a heat pump.
